Twitter and X Video Downloader
Extract and download high-resolution MP4 video streams and animated GIFs from public Twitter (X) posts.
Twitter / X Video Downloader
Technical Architecture: Reverse-Engineering Twitter Media Stream Extraction
Twitter (X) delivers video content using adaptive HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) .m3u8 playlists and multi-bitrate progressive MP4 streams hosted across private Content Delivery Networks (video.twimg.com).
Because Twitter's CDN headers enforce strict Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) rules that prevent direct client-side downloads, the Twitter Video Downloader combines a serverless metadata resolver with an edge streaming proxy (/api/videoDownloader).
1. Tweet ID Resolution & Media Variant Discovery
When a user submits a tweet URL (e.g. https://x.com/username/status/1234567890), the backend parses the numeric status ID and queries Twitter's syndication API to extract video media descriptors:
// api/videoDownloader.js (Twitter stream resolution extract)
async function handleTwitter(req, res) {
const { url, tweetId } = req.query;
const id = tweetId || extractTweetId(url);
// Query syndication endpoint with guest token
const syndicationUrl = `https://cdn.syndication.twimg.com/tweet-result?id=${id}&lang=en`;
const response = await fetch(syndicationUrl, {
headers: {
'User-Agent': 'Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36'
}
});
const tweetData = await response.json();
const videoDetails = tweetData.video;
if (!videoDetails || !videoDetails.variants) {
return res.status(404).json({ error: 'No video stream found on this post' });
}
// Filter for valid progressive MP4 video streams and sort by bitrate descending
const mp4Variants = videoDetails.variants
.filter(v => v.type === 'video/mp4')
.sort((a, b) => (b.bitrate || 0) - (a.bitrate || 0));
res.status(200).json({
title: tweetData.text || 'Twitter Video',
durationMs: videoDetails.durationMs,
variants: mp4Variants
});
}
2. Edge Streaming Proxy (Bypassing CORS & 0KB Download Issues)
When browsers attempt to download media directly from video.twimg.com, missing Content-Disposition: attachment headers and restrictive CORS policies often cause the browser to fail or download an empty 0KB file.
To solve this, /api/videoDownloader provides an edge media proxy (?action=proxy) that pipes the upstream CDN binary stream directly to the client with valid attachment headers:
async function handleProxy(req, res) {
const mediaUrl = req.query.mediaUrl;
const decodedUrl = decodeURIComponent(mediaUrl);
const mediaRes = await fetch(decodedUrl, {
headers: {
'User-Agent': 'Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36',
'Referer': 'https://twitter.com/'
}
});
res.setHeader('Content-Type', mediaRes.headers.get('content-type') || 'video/mp4');
res.setHeader('Content-Disposition', 'attachment; filename="twitter-video.mp4"');
// Stream buffer directly to client response
const arrayBuffer = await mediaRes.arrayBuffer();
res.send(Buffer.from(arrayBuffer));
}
3. Twitter MP4 Video Stream Specifications
| Resolution | Aspect Ratio | Typical Bitrate | Target Devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p Full HD | 16:9 / 9:16 | 2,176 – 3,200 kbps | Desktop monitors, 4K TVs |
| 720p HD | 16:9 / 9:16 | 832 – 1,280 kbps | Tablets, modern mobile displays |
| 480p SD | 16:9 / 9:16 | 432 – 640 kbps | Standard mobile feeds |
| 360p Low | 16:9 / 9:16 | 256 – 320 kbps | Low-bandwidth mobile connections |
| GIF Loop | Variable | 500 – 1,500 kbps | Silent looping MP4 video containers |
4. Client-Side Security & Zero-Logging Guarantee
- No Credentials Required: The downloader operates exclusively on public tweets and requires zero user login or API keys.
- Ephemeral Memory Streaming: Video streams are buffered in temporary Vercel memory and streamed directly to your browser without persistent disk writes.
- Privacy Preserved: Neither the submitted tweet links nor the resulting media files are logged or tracked.
