IP Tracker - What is my IP?

Detect your public IPv4/IPv6 address, Autonomous System Number (ASN), Internet Service Provider (ISP), and approximate network routing location.

Technical Architecture: Reverse-Engineering Client IP Discovery & BGP Routing

When an HTTP client connects to an edge server, the network stack resolves the origin IP address through socket properties and proxy forwarding headers.

The IP Tracker inspects ingress network headers and queries GeoIP databases to resolve client connectivity data and autonomous system routing information.

1. Ingress Header Inspection Hierarchy

When traffic traverses reverse proxies, load balancers, and CDN networks (Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront, Vercel), the client's direct socket IP represents the proxy edge rather than the end user.

The tool cascades through standard forwarding headers to discover the originating client:

[ Ingress IP Discovery ]
1. CF-Connecting-IP (Cloudflare Edge standard)
└──> 2. X-Real-IP (Nginx / OpenResty standard)
└──> 3. X-Forwarded-For (First comma-separated client IP)
└──> 4. req.socket.remoteAddress (Direct TCP socket origin)
function extractClientIp(req) {
const headers = req.headers;
const cfIp = headers['cf-connecting-ip'];
if (cfIp) return cfIp;

const realIp = headers['x-real-ip'];
if (realIp) return realIp;

const forwarded = headers['x-forwarded-for'];
if (forwarded) {
// Return first IP before downstream proxies
return forwarded.split(',')[0].trim();
}

return req.socket?.remoteAddress || '127.0.0.1';
}

2. Autonomous System Numbers (ASN) & BGP Routing

The Internet is divided into thousands of independent administrative routing domains known as Autonomous Systems (AS):

  • ASN Allocation: Managed globally by IANA and distributed through Regional Internet Registries (RIRs: ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC).
  • BGP Routing: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) advertises blocks of IP prefixes (e.g. /24 for IPv4, /48 for IPv6) associated with an ASN to guide packet forwarding across the global Internet backbone.
  • ISP Mapping: Every public IP address belongs to an ASN managed by an ISP, enterprise, cloud hosting provider (e.g., AS15169 Google, AS16509 Amazon, AS13335 Cloudflare), or telecommunications carrier.

3. IPv4 vs IPv6 Technical Comparison

SpecificationIPv4 (RFC 791)IPv6 (RFC 8200)
Address Length32 bits (4 bytes)128 bits (16 bytes)
Address Space~4,294,967,296 addresses~3.4 × 10³⁸ addresses
Format NotationDotted decimal (192.0.2.1)Hexadecimal colon (2001:db8::1)
NAT NecessityHeavy use of CGNAT and RFC 1918 NATNative end-to-end global routability
Header Size20 to 60 bytes (variable)40 bytes (fixed base header)
ConfigurationManual or DHCPSLAAC (Stateless Address Autoconfiguration)

4. Client-Side Security & Zero-Tracking Guarantee

  • No Logging: Queries and discovered IP addresses are evaluated statelessly in memory and never logged to persistent databases.
  • No Third-Party Ad Pixels: Unlike commercial ad-heavy "What is my IP" sites, this tool runs zero ad trackers, fingerprinting scripts, or third-party cookies.
  • Accurate Caveat: Geolocation data reflects the ISP point of presence (PoP) routing node rather than a private physical residence.
